I went to a warehouse today and helped out bag care packages for the flood stricken. It is encouraging to see an overwhelming response to the need. Both the rich and the poor are giving what they can to help out. It saddens me though to see that this event is also being used for political gain and personal empowerment. Several areas seems to get the advantage of quick response because it affected the area where movie stars reside while the poorest neighborhood is at the bottom of the totem pole. One actor got a hold of a speed boat and rescued a fellow actor while ignoring the pleas of others.
We went to the flood area and gave out the care packages. The water levels have receded but the area is now dealing with a foot of mud. One hundred sixty people perished and the numbers are climbing. I saw a body of a child and her dog floating by the river. Listened to people's stories Several bodies have been found submerged under the mud that they are stepping upon. The possibility of diseases is a growing concern. Several people haven't eaten for days, many are wearing muddied clothing. Cars that were submerged are now mud filled. One of the cell phone companies opened up a communication post for public use. Most have lost just about everything they owned but still finds a way to laugh at their situation. I have not found or heard of one person blaming GOD for this catastrophe in fact they are thanking GOD because it could have been worst.
My experience at UGM have served me well in assisting today.
