Subterranean River

We rode a van for a two hour trip to Sabang then caught a pumpboat that took us to the mouth of the famous Subterranean River which is reputed to be the longest underground navigable river in the world. It stretches for 8 kilometers. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park features a spectacular limestone karst landscape with its underground river. A distinguishing feature of the river is that it flows directly into the sea, and the lower portion of the river is subject to tidal influences. The area also represents a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a full mountain to the sea ecosystem and protects forests, which are among the most significant in Asia.
We were entertained by the presence of monkeys while waiting for a boat that would take us inside the cave. One must be careful though as these monkeys will steal anything, including bags and cameras. Thousands of swallows live inside the cave and are seen flying all over the place and making a lot of noise as their means of sonar direction. Bats are seen hanging upside down.
The rock formations are really amazing and the guide provided plenty of information and the occasional joke to make the trip informative and enjoyable. This park is short listed for the 7th natural wonder of the world competition. This is a must see.
